Construction of the Colosseum began in 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. It was further modified and completed by his successor, Emperor Titus. The Colosseum was primarily used for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and other spectacles to entertain Roman citizens. It was a major venue for public events and gatherings. The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre made of concrete and stone. It is approximately 189 metres long, 156 metres wide, and about 50 metres high. It could accommodate around 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The exterior facade of the Colosseum consists of three tiers of arches, with statues and columns decorating the structure.
