The USS Arizona was a battleship launched during World War I. Throughout her service, the ship underwent several modernizations. Arizona was present during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. During this attack, a catastrophic explosion occurred on board. Most of the crew perished and the ship sank, making it a symbol of the Japanese attack. The wreck of the battleship was never salvaged. The parts of the superstructure that protruded above the water were removed, leaving only the barbette of the third main artillery turret above the waterline. In 1962, the USS Arizona Memorial was opened over the wreck.
