The Sd.Kfz. Ferdinand , named after designer Ferdinand Porsche, was the first version of the German heavy tank destroyer that was later developed into the Elefant. This imposing vehicle appeared in 1943 and was deployed on the Eastern Front, including during the infamous Battle of Kursk. With its heavy armor and the powerful 88 mm PaK 43/2 L/71 anti-tank gun, the Ferdinand could take out almost any Allied vehicle. However, it also had weaknesses, such as limited mobility, susceptibility to breakdowns, and vulnerability to infantry attacks. Despite the relatively small production numbers, the Ferdinand grew into one of the most recognizable German vehicles of the Second World War.
