On February 23, 1945, six Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi. This extraordinary scene, captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal, became one of the most recognizable images of the war and a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and strength.
The Battle of Iwo Jima – fighting for every inch of ground
From February 19 to March 26, 1945, fierce fighting raged on the island of Iwo Jima. Capturing the summit of Suribachi on February 23 did not mean the end of the battle: Japanese soldiers, hidden in a dense network of tunnels and bunkers, held out until the final days of March. Of the six Marines seen in the famous photo, three were killed during the subsequent fighting.
The photo – the moment the flag was raised – became a symbol of victory as well as the ultimate sacrifice. For Rosenthal, winning the Pulitzer Prize was simply the crowning achievement of a moment that touched hearts worldwide.
