Historical background:
The HMS Belfast was a light cruiser of the British Royal Navy during World War II. She was commissioned on August 5, 1939. At the end of November that same year, she was out of service for three years due to damage from a German mine. From 1942, she escorted Arctic convoys. On December 26, 1943, together with the cruisers HMS Norfolk and HMS Sheffield, she resisted attacks from the German battleship Scharnhorst, which was trying to break through to an Allied convoy. The interception of the Scharnhorst contributed to its eventual encirclement and destruction. HMS Belfast also took part in the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz. From June 1944, she underwent a major renovation. In August 1945, she arrived in the port of Sydney, where the end of the war in the Pacific reached her. Between 1945 and 1962, she served in the Far East, including participation in the Korean War, with breaks for repairs. In 1966, she was designated as a residential hulk, but in 1971, she faced scrapping. Thanks to the efforts of the British public, this was prevented; the ship was moored in the Thames and transformed into a museum exhibit. Subsequent renovations extended her lifespan.
