The SR-71 Blackbird was a revolutionary supersonic reconnaissance aircraft, developed in the late 1950s for the CIA and later used by both the US Air Force and NASA. With speeds up to Mach 3.5 and a ceiling of 26,000 meters, this aircraft remained elusive to radars and anti-aircraft systems for years. Only 32 units were built in total, making the Blackbird a rare and iconic symbol of military and technological progress today. The aircraft was retired in the late 1980s, and its final flight took place on October 9, 1999.
