History of the V2
The V2 (Vergeltungswaffe 2) was the world’s first long-range ballistic missile, developed by Germany during World War II. Chief designer Wernher von Braun later became a pioneer in the American space program. From 1944, V2 rockets were deployed to attack cities like London and other Allied locations. They had a range of approximately 300 km and could carry a 1-ton explosive payload. After launch, the rocket rose to an altitude of about 100 km before falling back to its target at immense speed, making interception practically impossible. The V2 formed the basis for all modern ballistic missiles and had a major influence on post-war space technology.
