HMS Hood was a British battlecruiser from the period between the world wars and World War II. The ship was launched in 1918 and entered service two years later. It was 262.3 m long. The main artillery consisted of eight 381 mm BL Mk I guns. In the interwar period, the Hood, as the largest ship in the world, was the showpiece of the Royal Navy.

After the outbreak of World War II and the defeat of France, the ship was moved to Gibraltar, where it joined Force H. On May 21, 1941, HMS Hood, accompanied by the battleship Prince of Wales, set out on her final voyage. Three days later, the British ships clashed in the Denmark Strait with the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. After a brief long-range artillery duel, a well-aimed salvo caused an internal explosion in the Hood’s stern, completely destroying the ship. Of the 1,418 crew members, only three sailors were rescued. The sinking of HMS Hood sent shockwaves through Great Britain.
